Wau Off-Grid Solar PV Power Plant Project
Capacity
55.25 MWh
Year
2025
Location
13.5 km north of the Wau Airport area, positioned directly alongside the Wau-Kuajok-Gogrial Road in Western Bahr el Ghazal State, South Sudan
Type

Overview
This project aims to provide sustainable, 24/7 electricity to Wau city, the second-largest urban center in South Sudan, to address the region's significant energy deficit.
Challenge
Geological/Technical: The area faces risks from expansive and potentially corrosive soils, moderate seismic risk due to proximity to the East African Rift, and seasonal flooding/waterlogging during the rainy season.Environmental: There are moderate risks of erosion and sedimentation due to land use changes and localized mudslides during wet periods.
Solution
Engineering: Use of hot-dip galvanized steel mounting structures anchored in concrete-cased foundations to withstand soil saturation.Infrastructure: Implementation of masonry-lined drainage channels, precast concrete culverts, and elevated floor levels (0.5m) for battery rooms to mitigate flood risks.Materials: Adoption of corrosion-resistant and waterproof materials for long-term durability.
Results
The project is expected to displace 235.7 Kilotons of CO2 emissions and save approximately 155.5 million USD in fuel costs over its lifetime.

Detailed Case Study
Solar PV System and Power Generation
- The system is comprised of 22,400 high-efficiency JAM78S30-605/MR Monocrystalline PERC modules.
- Each module is rated at 605 Watts, contributing to a total simulated capacity of 13.55 MWp.
- To capture maximum power, the modules are installed at a fixed inclination angle of 13 degrees.
- The total land area required for the arrays and required safety zones is estimated at 6.3 hectares.
Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)
- The facility utilizes a 55.25 MWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery array, selected for its safety and long operational lifespan.
- The BESS ensures 100% load availability year-round, managing an average daily demand of 52,428 kWh.
- The storage is distributed across four dedicated battery buildings, each measuring 1,326 $m^2$.
Power Conversion and Transmission
- Four advanced Sungrow SG3400HV-MV-30 Turnkey Power Conversion Stations manage the system's grid-forming capabilities.
- Power is stepped up to 33 kV via integrated transformers to minimize energy losses during transmission.
- A 13.5 km overhead transmission line connects the plant to the city, with engineered losses kept below 2.4%.
Civil Infrastructure and Facilities
- The overall project site covers 120 hectares, with 40 hectares prioritized for Phase I development due to favorable elevation.
- Infrastructure includes all-weather 8m and 5m-wide gravel access roads equipped with drainage ditches.
- Site security is maintained through barbed-wire fencing, perimeter lighting, CCTV surveillance, and four guardhouses positioned at the site corners.
- Operational facilities include a 140 $m^2$ control room for supervision and staff welfare, a warehouse, and a groundwater well.
